RISE ABOVE YOUR LIMITATION: (Mark 10:46-52)

Bartimaues, the son of Timaeus (Son of Horror) was born blind. He was not only blind but also a beggar. There is something great inside the beggar, which Jesus saw.

Bartimaues was blind. He was limited so he had to depend upon other people.

Ps 139:14 “I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made”. God cannot be limited. He was the last say in our life.

Mark 10:47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Though Bartimaeus was blind, he used what he had ie his vocal chord. He could shout and scream. He could not see, but he could hear.

Use what you have?

The Lord asked Moses “What is that in your hand?” Moses answered“A rod” (Ex 4:2) Then God said to Moses “You shall take this rod in your hand, with which you will do the sign” (4:17) Great miracles were accomplished with that rod when Moses obeyed the Lord. It was insignificant in itself but it became a power instruments when committed to the Lord.

What is that in your hand?

o Your identity

o Your influence

o Your income.

J.W. Johnson writing on this theme imagined the following conversation “what is that in your hand asked the Lord?’

A sling! said David. The Lord said, “It is enough, go up against the giant, and the giant Goliath fell before the shepherd boy David.

A pen! Said John Bunyan as he spoke from the Arches of Bedford Prison. “It is enough” and he wrote the story “Pilgrim Progress” which will live while the world endures.

What is in your hand?

Don’t keep talking of what you don’t have. Stop complaining of what you don’t have. It does not take great people to do great things but unselfish ones.

Someone has said, “The world is yet to see what one person can do if He is totally committed to His will”

What is in your hand? Don’t sell yourself short. It God has called you to a task. He will equip you for it. Use what He has given you and you’ll see what He can do with little things. Where God guides, He provides.

What am I doing what has been given. God uses ordinary, insignificant tools to perform extraordinary and large tasks

MIRACLES OUT OF YOUR MISTAKES!

Your negative past cannot keep you from your positive future. God is not looking for perfect people but people whose heart is right.

We read about Moses. He is one of the heroes of faith. He made lots of mistakes. It looked Moses messed up God’s plan but it didn’t.

When Moses messed up he was 40 years old and 40 years later God appeared! God always gives the second opportunity i.e. another chance. I still have other dreams to bring the plans into reality (come to pass). God is a God of another chance.

When we miss the way, God use another way to bring your dream to pass.

“God, I blew it”- Lord, full of wisdom- he will help you.

Heb 4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Ps 139:16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained {for me,} When as yet there was not one of them.

Where you are is not a surprise to God. You have to shake off complacency. Eg, mess by children.

If our heart is right, God cleans up the mess

LUKE 7

Mary poured jar of perfume and put it in Jesus’ feet.

Mary had a wrong past but she had the right heart so she had a bright future. The first person the Angels spoke was Mary.

“Where you have been is not important but where you be”

Zeph 3:19 "Behold, I am going to deal at that time With all your oppressors, I will save the lame And gather the outcast, And I will turn their shame into praise and renown In all the earth.

“God does not look what you are but what you can be”

You need to receive His forgiveness, commit to Him, and receive the mercy of God.

E God can take your mess and make it your message

E Your negative past cannot disqualify your bright future.

John 6:12 When they were filled, He *said to His disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost."

You can come to God with broken pieces.

Jer 18:4 But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.

Potter represents God. Be stayed filled with hope. Don’t write yourself off. God dreams to take the broken pieces and make it new.

WAYS OF GOD- SUFFERING

1 PETER 4:12-19

1 Pet 4:12 ¶ Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;

1 Pet 4:13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.

1 Pet 4:14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

1 Pet 4:15 Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler;

1 Pet 4:16 but if {anyone suffers} as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.

1 Pet 4:17 For {it is} time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if {it} {begins} with us first, what {will be} the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

1 Pet 4:18 AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER?

1 Pet 4:19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Suffering is not new. God uses our suffering

What is suffering? Result of anything that causes us pain; sometimes sin, God’s discipline and persecution.

Suffering is painful and perplexing.

Why God allows us to suffer?

1. To get our attention

Ps 119:67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

Ps 119:71 It is good for me that I was afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes.

2. To develop maturity and righteousness in our life

3. To prune our life

John 15:1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

John 15:2 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every {branch} that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

~ Righteous and godly in our conduct

~ Righteous and godly in our action.

~ Maximising your potential as a child of God

Purity and power cannot be separated. The pruning process is to remove dead leaves.

4. To teach us obedience

He loves us- Heb 12:5,6

God has a desire for us to be righteous and pure

Obey parental authority

5. To teach us to trust Him 1 Pet 1:7 so that the proof of your faith, {being} more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

6. To bring continounce dependence of His grace & goodness: Paul’s epistles were written when He was suffering. God , what is your purpose> Why are you allowing this in my life?

7. To manifest Christ’s life and character in us. - living example. God does not allow to much. He always have a purpose. Whatever may be the form of suffering God has a purpose and God is up to something.

8. To purify our hearts- (sermon of the mount)” The pruning knife of God goes very deep”

ü A pure heart is a righteous heart, righteous motive.

ü A pure heat desire purity

9. So we can share in the holiness of God.- Heb 12:10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He {disciplines us} for {our} good, so that we may share His holiness.

10. To teach us to give thanks in everything-1 Thess 5:18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

ü Perseverance does not give up.

ü Perseverance builds character in your life.

11. To teach character & perseverance-Rom 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Rom 5:2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

Rom 5:3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

Rom 5:4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;

Rom 5:5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

12. To enable us to share in suffering of Christ- Phil 3:8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,

Phil 3:9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from {the} Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which {comes} from God on the basis of faith,

Phil 3:10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;

Experience something of His suffering. Sensible to others suffering

13. To prevent pride in our lives – eg Paul- Thorns in the flesh

14. To broaden the ministry-Phil 1:12 ¶ Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,

Phil 1:13 so that my imprisonment in {the cause of} Christ has become well known throughout the whole Praetorian Guard and to everyone else,

15. Reveal the evil nature of mankind and the Righteous judgment of God

Response: Lord, what are you saying. What are you upto for my life?

All suffering are not the results of sin.

THE CURE FOR CONFLICT IN THE CHURCH

In verses 1-5 you want to go your own way – the Lord said that this type of people are adulterous people

Road sign to cure conflicts

# 1 ~ Submit to God ( To submit is to obey)

James 4:7 Submit therefore to God

Luke 2:51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all {these} things in her heart.

Submission is a voluntary act

ü Romans 13:1-7 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for {rulers} are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax {is due;} custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

ü I Cor 16:16 that you also be in subjection to such men and to everyone who helps in the work and labors.”

ü I Peter 5:5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to {your} elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

ü Eph 5:22 Wives, {be subject} to your own husbands, as to the Lord.”

ü I Peter 2:18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.”

When you submit to God , Satan will try to tempt you.

#2 ~ Resist the Devil ( Vs 7)-Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

ü 1 Pet 5:8-9 “Be of sober {spirit,} be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

But resist him, firm in {your} faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.”

ü Matt 4: Jesus quoted scripture

# 3~ Draw near to God(v-8)- “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Come close to God- Satan is not comfortable. You need to struggle with God. The more closer you are to God, the more distance you are from the devil.

#4~ Clean your hands (vs 8) “Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

Ex 30 – Getting rid of our sins in our hearts

Psalm 24:3,4Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully.”

#5 ~ Grieve, mourn & wail (vs 9) “Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.”

Psalm 6:6I am weary with my sighing; Every night I make my bed swim, I dissolve my couch with my tears.”

Romans 7:24,25Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.”

# 6 ~ Humble yourself before the Lord(v.10)- Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

Be down in your face

ü Psalm 149:4 For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation.

ü Prov 3:34 Though He scoffs at the scoffers, Yet He gives grace to the afflicted.

ü Matt 23:12 "Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”

Conclusion:- Seize every opportunity to lift others in the church

HAVE A GREAT DAY

Don’t enter it regretting the past or fearing the future. Remember that God is the Great I AM.

“When you live in the past with its mistakes and regrets,
IT IS HARD
I am not there.
My Name is not I WAS
When you live in the future with its problems and fears,
IT IS HARD
I am not there.
My Name is not I WILL BE
When you live in this moment
IT IS NOT HARD
I am here
My Name is I AM”
Helen Mallicoat

Yes, this is His great present to us for each new day. This must be why we call our now moments the PRESENT

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

MALACHI 1-4

Fearing God with the audacity to obey. The temple is rebuilt, the altar is set up, the sacrifices are offered, the feasts and fasts are alike observed, and to these people- with outward form and ritual, perfect to the last minute detail- the prophecy comes, the Divine complaint is made.

The word of the Lord came through Malachi

A Mal 1:2 ¶ "I have loved you," says the LORD. But you say, "How have You loved us?" "{Was} not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD. "Yet I have loved Jacob;

A Mal 1:6 ¶ " 'A son honors {his} father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?' says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests who despise My name. But you say, 'How have we despised Your name?'

A Mal 1:7 "{You} are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say, 'How have we defiled You?' In that you say, 'The table of the LORD is to be despised.'

A Mal 2:17 You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you say, "How have we wearied {Him?}" In that you say, "Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delights in them," or, "Where is the God of justice?"

A Mal 3:7 ¶ "From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept {them.} Return to Me, and I will return to you," says the LORD of hosts. "But you say, 'How shall we return?'

A Mal 3:8 ¶ "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.

A Mal 3:13 "Your words have been arrogant against Me," says the LORD. "Yet you say, 'What have we spoken against You?'

They looked at the prophet with mingled astonishment and incredulity, and they say, Wherein! How! What do you mean!

What is the significance of this word “How”?

These people are not in open rebellion against God, nor do they deny His right to offering, but they are laboring under the delusion that because they have brought offerings, they have been true to Him all along.

There is not a language of a people throwing of a yoke and saying, “We will not be loyal”, but a people established in the temple. It is not a language of a people who say “let us cease to sacrifice, and worship; and let us do as we please” but it is the language of a people who say, “we are sacrificing and worshipping to please God,” and yet He says, by the mouth of His servant, “ Ye have wearied Me; ye have robbed and spoken against Me.”

They have been most particular and strict in outward observances, but their heart have been far away from the ceremonials. They have been boasting themselves in their knowledge of truth, responding to that knowledge, mechanically, technically; but their hearts, their lives, their characters, the inwardness of their natures, have been a perpetual contradiction in the eyes of heaven, to the will of God; and when the prophet tells them what God thinks of them, they, with astonishment and impertinence, look into his face and say “we don’t see this at all!”

There are seven complaints against them:-

· Profanity- (1:6-7)- pro- from; fanum- temple ie away from the temple. It is the outward service. Today it is the profanity of the church. Christendom and church are two things. Christendom is the outward eprofession of Christianity which has labeled Christ and driven the mass of the people away from our services and ordinances

  • Sacrilege (1:8)- These men are now absolutely offereing to God the blind, and the lame and the sick. Sacrilege is centered in offering God something which costs nothing, because you think God is worth nothing. God looks for the giving at His altar of a gift that costs something.
  • Greed (1:10) – These people were opening His doors and kindling fires, because they anticipated gain thereby. There was an ulterior motive in every gift, placed upon the altar, and in every deed performed, and service rendered. The service of God has degenerated into the slavery of a selfish interest. God wants men who will render service to Him for the very love of Him, even though thye never have reward.
  • Weariness in service.: (1:13) I believe this is one of the most remarkable signs of the present time. Great principles are revealed in small things and unexpected ways, and Christendom is saying “ The thing is a weariness,” Scores of people in our churches today, who will hear an open opera through and through- and not once only- will put out their watches and becomes anxious and fidgety if a preacher exceeds, by a few minutes’s pace, what is recognized as his allotted time
  • Honoring of vice or Treason against the covenant of heaven. (2:17,18)- That is beyond weariness and sniuffing; that is treason of the very worst form. That is a countenancing and an excusing of sin. That is an attempt to gloss evil and treat it lightly as of no importance. When man begin to excuse sin, and to say that it does not matter so much, that God delights in them that do evil, that there is judgment, then he is committing high treason
  • Robbery from God (3:8)- People are habitually telling us that God demanded the tithe. God demanded the tithe only as a minimum. Some men have not business to give a tithe of their earnings- they cannot afford it, and there are men who are robbing God by giving only a tithe of their incomes.
  • Blasphemy against Him. (3:13,14)- This is the sin of blasphemy. What is blasphemy? The word means to speak injuriously, to say something that shall injure the one against whom you have spoken it; and men have come to use it mostly of Divine things. To blaspheme is to say that which injures God, and His cause and His kingdom. The very worst form of blasphemy is the misrepresentation of God by people who profess to love His name, and look apparently with exuberant delight for the comingof his kingdom. The man who openly blashemes, and who are standing under the sun, looks up at the heavens and says”I hate God” is far less dangerous in the influence of his life than the man who says “I love God” and disobeyes Him

******* THINGS TO BE NOTED FOR PRIEST AND PRIESTESS (2:7-9)

The teachers of the people, the messengers of God, have themselves done despite to the law of God, by proclaiming as a fact, and denying it in their own lives.

The Priest should not only have the knowledge but should keep it, that is, walk in it, be obedient to it, be the embodiment of the knowledge He holds, of which he is the depository for the time being. (2:7-9)

Let's look ourself as an individual and as a church. How is our condition? Let's do a reflection of our life. If God to come now and checks us what will He finds in us?

à 2 Tim 3:1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come.

à 2 Tim 3:2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

à 2 Tim 3:3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good,

à 2 Tim 3:4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

I ask you very solemnly to read that description and apply it to the age we live. Take Christendom at large. You have thousands of people who can give you good reasons for belonging to the Church, who have some purity in their lives responding to the claims of Jesus Christ, and seem to be not only maintaining the outward forms, but appear also to hold tenaciously to the truth which is the formative power of the church, and yet whose lives are not in correspondence to the truth they hold.

THOSE WHO FEAR HIS NAME:

But for those who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wing. And you will go out and leap likes calves released from the stall. Then you will trample down the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do these things," says the Lord Almighty. (Mal 4:2, 3)

To those who fear His name- the Sun of righteousness and healing. To the proud and all who do wickedly- FIRE! Burning them as stubble.

The sun shall be the scorching heat that will burn, but the Sun will also have healing in His wings. It depends on the character of the men upon whom His light falls whether they shall be burned or healed.

THREE STEWARDS & THIER SERVICE

Luke 19:11-27

Luke 19:11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

Luke 19:12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

Luke 19:13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

Luke 19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

Luke 19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

Luke 19:16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

Luke 19:17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

Luke 19:18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.

Luke 19:19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

Luke 19:20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:

Luke 19:21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

Luke 19:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:

Luke 19:23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

Luke 19:24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

Luke 19:25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)

Luke 19:26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

Luke 19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

As Jesus’ ministry moved to its climax and Jerusalem came in sight, the twelve disciples continued to hope that a successful, worldly type if revolution was about to take place- a revolution which would inaugurate the promised reign of God. They bickered about the places, which they would occupy in the New Order. This parable was recounted as a corrective to their attitude:

1) it warned that the Messiah was to be rejected by men.

2) And it taught there lay ahead a period when the disciples of Jesus must engage in faithful service during their Master’s absence- serving until He returned in Kingly power. Two strands of thought are thus intertwined. The centre of interest, however, is that there are ten servants, each of whom is given a mina[1] with which to trade and make a profit.

Ø The first servant, having successfully demonstrated his faithful and competent stewardship, received the privilege of high office.

Ø The second servant, less successful, received a correspondingly lesser privilege.

Ø A third, however, had not done his duty, not even to the extent of letting a banker do the work for him. He criticized His master for his harshness in unjustly appropriating the fruit of other men’s laborers, and said that he was afraid to trade lest he incurred a loss and consequently was punished. He was rebuked for his laziness and his money was confiscated.

In this parable, the need for faithful servant is taught, and the prospect of reward and loss put before the servants. It should be remembered that the story is just what it is: a story, and the description of the master cannot be taken to be a true representation of God, with God being portrayed as unjust, unfair and even greedy, wanting to make a profit from the labours of others. At the same time, however, the reality and seriousness of divine judgment cannot be evaded.

REFLECTION:

i. Will we be able to give our Master a satisfactory account of what has been entrusted to us? Will we have used our minas profitably?

ii. How can we be faithful servants going about our Master’s affairs NCF?

HOW TO INVEST YOUR LIFE

Matthew 25:14-30

At the end of your life if you were asked, “How can you determine if your life was worthwhile?” How would you answer that? You come to the end of your life and start reviewing it and you say, “Did my life count? Did my life make a difference, an impact?” What are you going to look for? Wealth? Fame? Popularity? Pleasure? Experiences you had in life?

There are three things you can do with life. Three options.

1. I can waste my life. “You only go around once in life. Go with gusto!” Live for today. Do your own thing. If it feels good, do it. Waste your life.

2. I can spend my life. I can spend it on a career, a family, making a name for myself. I can spend my life in many different ways.

3. I can invest my life.

The best use of your life is to invest your life in something that outlasts it. The people, who waste their lives, we call fools. The people, who spend their lives, we call average. They get up, go to work, come home, watch TV, go to bed, retire and die. But the people who invest their lives we call leaders.

I want to look at some principles of leadership based on the parable of the talents in Matthew 25. From this parable we see seven principles for investing your life, on how to make your life count. How to invest your life in a way that’s going to outlast it.

1. THE PRINCIPLE OF OWNERSHIP

Everything I have really belongs to God. God made it all and since He made it all, He owns it all. The creator is the owner. Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” Everything that’s in it is His. God made everything. Everything you see, God owns. We’re just loaned it for 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 years – however long you’re here. You get to use it awhile and then you pass it on. You never really own anything. It’s just while you’re here on earth you get to use it. Then it goes on and somebody else gets to use it.

Genesis 2:15 tells us God’s purpose for man from the very beginning of time. “The Lord God took the man and He put him in the Garden of Eden to work it [circle “work it”] and to take care of it [circle “take care of it”] God made the world and then He put man on it to manage it. We are the managers of the world. We are to manage God’s creation. He put us here to take care of His world. The word “management” and the word “stewardship” are the same word. It means to be a manager. God has entrusted to you certain things, certain abilities, certain gifts and opportunities – certain things – but they all really belong to God.

Matthew 25:14 “Again it would be like a man going on a journey who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” In this parable the master represents God and we are the people, the servants. Property has been entrusted to us. Circle “entrusted”. God has entrusted some things to you, some relationships to you, some privileges to you, some responsibilities to you. Everything I have really belongs to God. That’s the bedrock – The Principle of Ownership.

2. The Principle of Allocation.

God has given me some talents. He’s given you some talents. He’s given you some abilities. V. 15 “To one who gave five talents, to another two talents, to another one talent, each according to his ability.” The word “talent” (when we talk about it today) actually comes from this story. In the Bible, the word “talent” was just a measurement of money, approximately $1000. But because this story has been told for two thousand years, the word “talent” now refers to the way we think it means as talent. He’s saying that God has given us some talents. He’s allocated some things. Some get five, some get two, some get one – each according to his ability.

A talent is anything God has entrusted to me. Anything. Anything that God has entrusted to me can be a talent. There are actually three different varieties of talents: abilities, resources, opportunities. All three of those are trust. God gives you resources, He gives you abilities, He gives you opportunities. All three of those are gifts of God. We don’t own those things. They are allocated to you.

Couple of lessons:

The amount differs but everybody gets something. That’s the point I want to make here. Somebody got ten talents, somebody gets five talents, somebody gets two talents, somebody gets one talents. There are different abilities and different levels of talent but everybody gets something. There are no no-talent people in the world. There’s no such thing as a no-talent person. Everybody has at least one talent. The amount differs but everybody gets something.

Romans 12:6 “We each have different gifts according to the grace God has given to us.” It’s grace but they’re all different gifts. You’re unique. You’re different. Everybody has at least one talent and we all have different talents. That’s the Principle of Allocation.

3. The Principle of Accountability

God expects me to use my talents. He expects me to make use of them. He’s made an investment in you. He wants a return. I am to make the most of the ability, the talents, the opportunities, the resources that God has given me.

v. 19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.” Circle “settled accounts”. One day you’re going to be audited by God. You think that being audited by the IRS is a task! One day you are going to have a life audit. God is going to come and audit your life. Romans 14:12 “Each of us will give an account [circle “give an account”] to God.” One day that’s going to be true of all of us. You will give an account of how you’ve wasted, spent or invested your life.

What’s going to happen? God’s going to ask you a question at that audit. “What did you do with what you were given?” What did I do with what I was given? God’s going to ask me what did I do with what I was given. That’s the Principle of Accountability.

4. The Principle of Utilization.

The next truth that this parable teaches is that it is wrong to bury my talent. He gives them to me. He expects me to use them. If I don’t use them, I’m sinning. It’s wrong to bury my talents.

Notice he has three different servants in the story. The first man, v. 16, received five talents. He went out and at once put his money to work and gained five talents more. He doubled his talents. He took five and doubled them. Pretty good investment.

The second man, v. 17. This guy is the one with two talents. He also went out and gained two more. He doubled his money. He’s got a hundred percent return. God’s pleased with that.

The third man. “But the man who had received one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money and buried it.” He buries his talent. He did nothing. The third guy is cautious, conservative. His philosophy of life could be as nothing ventured, nothing gained. That’s his philosophy. He’s going to play it save, cautious, conservative. “I’m going to take the one talent God has given me and I’m going to sit on it. I’m not going to double it. I’m not going to invest it. I’m not going to make any effort. I’m just going to sit on it.” Notice the master’s reaction to the guy who played it safe and cautious and conservative. V 26-27 “His master replied, `You wicked lazy servant. So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown, and gathered where I have not scattered seed. Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.” He could have put it in the bank. He could at least have gotten common, simple interest. But he sat on it, stuffed it in his mattress, buried it in the back yard. At least he could have put it in the bank.

The point here is the third guy had not even tried. His sin is inactivity. His sin is passivity. His sin is doing nothing. It says, he went and buried it. Circle that. He dug a hole and buried it in the ground, put it in the ground.

When you bury something, what’s the purpose? It’s dead. You want to bury it because you want to get it out of sight. We say, “Out of sight, out of mind.” The point is, he says, “I want to forget my responsibility about this talent.” Symbolically he’s saying, “I know I’ve got a responsibility. God’s given me a talent. But I don’t even want to think about it so I’m going to bury it. I’m going to get it out of sight, out of mind, out of the focal point of my life so I don’t want to face it.”

The point is, I cannot please God by playing it safe. Notice the master’s reaction. He said, “You lazy, wicked servant.” The guy didn’t do anything that we would see humanly wrong. He just didn’t do anything. God says that to do nothing is wicked and lazy. To do nothing with your life -- to just breathe, take up space, die -- is sin. You cannot please God by playing it safe. You must take risks. The Bible says without risks you don’t need any faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” If I’m not taking any risks, I don’t need any faith. And if I don’t have any faith, I’m not pleasing God because it takes faith to please God.

What risks have you taken this week? In faith? How pleasing was I this week to God? The Bible says that whatever is not of faith is sin. The point that he’s making here is that doing nothing with my life is absolutely inexcusable. God would rather have you try something and totally blow it than do nothing. God would rather have you attempt to do something great and fail than to have you attempt to do nothing and succeed. God would rather have you at least make an attempt, an effort, to live for Him, to try to minister for Him and fall flat on your face in humiliation than to have you do nothing. He said, “You did not even try.” Attempt something great and expect something great from God.

When I die I want four words written on my tombstone: “At least he tried.”

The point is, Jesus is saying it is wrong to bury my talents. The person who takes the one talent he’s got and buries it in the ground and says he’s not going to do anything about it, that is wicked and lazy, Jesus is saying. At least make an effort.

Notice which was the person who buried his talent in the ground. The guy with five, the guy with two or the guy with one? The point is, often it is the person with limited talent who is the most likely to do nothing. Why? Here’s the logic that Satan uses -- Since I’m not a super star, then I’ll just watch on the sidelines. Because I can’t sing like Rick Muchow, then I won’t ever sing. Because I can’t do something the best, I won’t even do it.

Why do we play it safe? That leads to the next principle.

5. The Principle of Motivation.

Fear keeps me from using my talent. Always fear. This is Satan’s favorite tactic. He uses fear to put us in prisons, to keep us from using the gifts and the abilities and the talents God’s given us. V. 26 “I was afraid [circle “afraid”] and I went out and hid your talent in the ground.” That’s why we play it safe. Satan’s tactic is to fill us with fear.

There are three different kinds of fear. These three will keep you from being effective in the ministry.

1. Self doubt:Self-doubt goes like this: “I could never do that. I’m just not qualified. I haven’t been trained. I could never do that.” Actually what this is, is a fear of failure

2. Self pity:Self-pity is just as bad as self-doubt. It keeps you in a prison and keeps you from being used by God in ministry. Self pity goes like this, “I failed in the past so I’ll never try again.”

3. Self consciousness: Self-consciousness goes like this: “What will other people think?” Proverbs 29:25 says “The fear of man is a snare.” It’s a trap. The moment that I start worrying about what other people think I’m dead in the water. What matters is what God thinks. What happens is we excuse ourselves by pointing to more talented people, more gifted people and say, “Lord, use them. If only I had the ability like…. If only I had the resources like…. If only I had the opportunity like …. If only I had the education like …. “ Just because you cannot do the spectacular does not excuse you to do nothing. Whether you’ve got one talent or five talents or ten talents or two talents, don’t let fear from using your talents.

v. 24 “The man who had received the one talent came and said, `Master, I knew you are a hard man, harvesting where you haven’t sown, gathering where you haven’t gathered seed.” That wasn’t true! The master wasn’t hard at all. The point is, fear causes me to make excuses for doing nothing. I make excuses why I can’t be involved in ministry but the bottom line is fear. —self doubt, self pity, self-consciousness.

6. The Principle of Application.

This is very simple. It says if I don’t use it, I’ll lose it. If I don’t use my talent, I’ll lose my talent. Notice v. 28 “The master said, `Take the one talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.” Does that sound fair? It doesn’t sound fair. It’s like the rich get richer, the talented get more talented. The guy who has only one talent, it’s being taken away from him.

The point is this: God has the right to take away anything that I don’t use to invest for Him.

If you don’t use it in the right way, you’ll lose it. If you don’t use it at all, it goes away. It’s a universal principle. If you refuse to exercise, what do you lose? Muscle. If you refuse to use your mind to think, your mind goes dull. If you refuse to practice, you lose a talent. It’s the universal principle of life. Whatever skill, ability, talent you have, if you don’t use it, you lose it.

7. The Principle of Compensation.

The Principle of Compensation says the opposite: If I use it wisely, I’ll be rewarded. If I use what God gives me wisely, then I will be rewarded. Notice in v. 23 the rewards this guy could have had. “His master replied, `Well done good and faithful servant. You’ve been faithful with a few things. I’ll put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.’”

In this passage we see three rewards. When you use whatever talent God has given you, God rewards you three specific ways.

1. Affirmation : “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Good job. You’re doing good. Good job. You’re trying to grow. You’re trying to develop.

2. Promotion : “You’ve been faithful in a few things, I’ll put you in charge of many things.” A lot of people want instant success but success starts in the small things of life. Being faithful in the little things. When you’re faithful in the little things, God gives you greater responsibility. You are responsible for the depth of your ministry; God is responsible for the breadth of your ministry. If you make sure your ministry is committed to Him, whatever it is, god will expand it as He sees fit with a promotion.

3. Celebration: “Come and share your master’s happiness.” The happiest people are those who are using whatever they’ve got for the glory of God right now. Those Christians who are bored and miserable and worn out and empty and dull, those are sitting on the sidelines.

Let’s review: Seven principles

1. Ownership. Everything I have belongs to God. I don’t really own anything. One of the things that does is relieve you of a lot of worry. It is God’s responsibility to care for everything. What makes you nervous is when you think you own it all.

2. Allocation. God has given me some talents. Some of you have five talents, some of you have one, some of you have two. If you want to have more talents, simply start using the one you’ve got and you’ll get another. The lesson is: the amount differs but everybody gets something.

3. Accountability. God expects me to use my talents. One day He’s going to do an audit of my life and He’s going to say, “What did you do with what I gave you?” Opportunities. Resources. Talents.

4. Utilization. It’s wrong to bury my talents. The Bible says I cannot please God by playing it safe. God says it’s sinful to bury my talent.

5. Motivation. It is fear that keeps me from using my talent. Self doubt. Self pity. Self-consciousness. When I put these things in my life it causes me to make excuses for why I can’t get involved.

6. Application. If I don’t use it, I’ll lose it. That’s the loss. But the compensation is, if I use it wisely, I’ll be rewarded greatly.

The best use of your life is to invest it in something that will outlast it. Jim Elliott said, “He is no fool who gives up what he can’t keep for that which he cannot lose.”

Prayer:

I look out on our church and see that it’s so full of unused talent. I know that so many people are really burying what God wants to do in their lives. Has fear kept you from getting involved in a ministry? Have you ever asked yourself, “How could God use me?” The fact is, He’ll give you the power. You say, “What if I don’t have the time or the energy?” Is it just possible that there may be things in your schedule that are not going to last for eternity and they need to be cut? Jesus said, “See ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things will be added unto you.” Seek first, not last. As we close, let me ask you a very serious question. When God does an audit of your life, what will the bottom line be? Will it be positive or negative? Will He be able to say, “You did a great job with what I gave you. I’m proud of your faithfulness.” Or will He have to say, “You wasted your time and your money and your talents on things that really didn’t count.” The wisest investment you’ll ever make is when you say, “Father, I want the rest of my life to count for eternity. I’m going to develop the talents You’ve given me and use them for You. I’m going to get off the bench and get into the game. I want to invest more of my time. Help me to find a place of ministry.” Maybe if you think in terms of a forty hour work week, a tithe of your time would be four hours a week for ministry. That would be a good starting point. “Lord, help me find four hours a week to give to You.” Whether it’s in a small group or working in the church office or helping in a Sunday School class. There are so many different ways God can use you. Some of you say, “By faith, I’m going to start tithing ten percent of my income as an eternal investment. The fact is, God’s going to put some of you in strategic positions. I really believe that as time goes by, but first He’s going to test you in the little things. Some of you have thought, “I’d like to get involved but I’ve been holding back.” God has a word for you. He wants to say, “Go for it!” The best use of your life is to invest it in those things that will outlast it.

Heavenly Father, I pray that no person here would waste their life. Even in just spending it, we would invest it in things that are going to count for ever and ever. We know that You’ve promised joy, reward and to even increase our talent as we use what we’ve got for You. Help us to break out of self-consciousness and self-pity and self doubt and take that risk in faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
